Counseling

Why Try? I think it's important to start here. There have been times in my life and in the lives of my clients, when the answer to this question is not perfectly clear. But the work of clarifying this critical question, the why, is worth it.

FAQ

Why Counseling?

You are the expert on YOU. But, we all come up against consistent themes and problems—blind spots. Counseling provides a space to address patterns, problems, and challenges directly and in a non-judgmental way. If you are tired of hitting the same walls or are simply facing a challenging time in your life, counseling can kick-start change.

WHat ISSUES do you treat?

I work primarily with men on issues such as relationship health, parenting, life transitions, depression, stress management, career issues, and substance use. I sometimes joke that I am a good fit for men who have resisted counseling for a long time—therapy for men who don’t like therapy. Let’s do a quick 10-minute call to see if I would be good fit for you.

what is your theoretical approach?

I am a person-centered therapist. I believe in creating and fostering the core conditions for growth to happen. Positive regard/non-judgement, empathy, and genuineness drive my approach. I also bring in existential psychotherapy elements and, at times, use cognitive behavioral therapy.

How Long is a session?

50-60 minutes.

Where do we start?

The presenting problem. It could be relationship challenges, depression, career anxiety, or something else. Sometimes there may be a thing behind the thing. You may want to take this on. Childhood trauma, unresolved grief, and family issues could be underlying your current challenges. I am a big believer in the value of your personal autonomy and lean heavily on the fact that you are the expert about your life. Together, we identify one, sometimes two, areas of focus. We develop specific goals and get to work. Often, things get harder before they get better, but I've found the non-linear effort to be worth it.

how long does counseling last?

Typically 3-6 months, meeting weekly or every other week.

do you do tele-counseling?

Yes. For clients in Georgia, per licensing regulations. I can either use FaceTime (privacy-compliant) or the phone. I have found this modality to be particularly helpful for people whose schedules are stretched thin. I am flexible with regard to off-hours/atypical times to do tele-counseling.

how much do you charge?

$165 per session.

do you take insurance?

No, but I will provide an invoice/super-bill for you to submit to your carrier, at your request.
